Animal Proteins Linked to Increased Mortality – Plants Decrease it

Scientists in Massachusets General Hospital in the United States have been doing a large study on how different sources of protein affect the mortality. More than 170 000 have been part of the study that started in 1980s, and it was published in JAMA International Medicine.

Intake of proteins from animals showed an increase of the mortality risk. Replacing animal proteins with plant based proteins such as beans, nuts, grains and vegetables, was shown to have a decreased risk of death.

From earlier studies we know that red meat is connected with lifestyle diseases such as cancer, diabetes and cardio vascular diseases. But this study looked at a different aspect.

Animal Proteins Linked to Mortality

The study concludes: “High animal protein intake was positively associated with mortality and high plant protein intake was inversely associated with mortality, especially among individuals with at least 1 lifestyle risk factor.”

They encourage public health recommendations to find improvements on protein sources.

According to CNN, Dr. Mingyang Song, a researcher at Massachusetts General Hospital and the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health, who served as lead author of the published study, said:

“Our findings have important public health implications…They can help refine the current dietary recommendations about protein intake and really get to the point that it is not only the amount but also the food sources of protein that are critical for long-term health.”

The Most Comprehensive Nutrition Study

The China-Cornell-Oxford Project, a 20-year study, known as the China Study, became known as the most comprehensive study of nutrition ever conducted. Interestingly enough, similarly with the new findings published in JAMA, they discovered that

  • Casein, the most important protein in cow milk could turn on and off the growth of cancer cells, by adding it, or removing it in the diet.
  • People that ate the most animal based foods had the most chronic diseases. Even a small intake of animal based foods had an unfavorable effect.
  • Those who ate the most plant based foods were the healthiest and mostly avoided chronic disease.
  • Heart disease, diabetes and obesity can be reversed through a healthy diet.

Counsel from a Health Revolutionist

Ellen G. White, a health revolutionist in the 1800’s came with many astonishing statements before her time and before science confirmed it. White is the most translated woman author of all time, and the most translated American author in history. Contrary to medical advice at the time she for instance warned against tobacco calling it a poison (4SG 128 [1864]), later confirmed by science. White also recommended a plant based diet.

She said the following in 1898:

“In a short time it will not be safe to use anything that comes from the animal creation.”

In an Interview with Dr. T. Colin Campbell, co-author of the China Study, February 24, 2005, he said:

“I am not aware of anyone who was more on point than Ellen White. Given her background, she is truly an amazing woman…I am convinced that almost 100% of her statements are now substantially supported by the scientific evidence that has been developed during the past 2-3 decades. What I have come to realize, to even deeply worry about, is why it is that this message of Ellen White and others has been so mislaid on shelves out of sight. It is abundantly clear to me that now is the time to bring this forward in whatever way that each of us are able to do.”

Second World War and Food

Norway, World War II - Mortality From Circulatory DiseasesDuring World War II, very interesting findings were made related to diet and mortality. Germany occupied Norway, and in a classic study from 1950, Strøm & Jensen found a decrease in mortality from circulatory diseases during the war. Why?
One of the big reasons were the change in diet. (In addition there were less smoking and people were more physically active.)

Germany confiscated the animals. So what was then left for food?
Mostly grains, legumes, vegetables and fruits.
Soon after, the number of deaths related to circulatory diseases decreased greatly.
In 1945, as the war ended, the animal products were again available. And then what happened with statistics? It went back as it was before the war.
Many big nutritionstudies are all pointing in the same direction – If you want to stay the healthiest, eat a plant based diet.
